Aegle marmelos, commonly known as Bael, is slow-growing, spinous, tough subtropical tree indigenous to the Eastern Ghats and Central India, and is extensively found across the Indian Peninsula and many Southeast Asian countries. Despite being a subtropical tree, it thrives in tropical climates as well, particularly at altitudes up to 1200 meters. The tree has fruits which vary in shape, ranging from round, oval, pyriform, to oblong, with diameters spanning 5 to 25 cm. The seeds are flat-oblong in shape, with a length of 1 cm.. 

Medicinal properties

Aegle marmelos is considered as a healing tree in Ayurveda, due to its diverse medicinal properties. All parts of the tree, namely, root, leaf, trunk, fruit, and seed, are used to cure various human ailments and diseases. The leaves are most effective in treating fever, nausea, vomiting, swellings, dysentery, dyspepsia, seminal weakness, and intermittent fever. The roots of bael are effective in treating urinary problems, preventing heart palpitations, and curing fevers. Bael fruits are edible and used in several traditional medications to treat chronic diarrhea, peptic ulcers, inhibit lipid peroxidation and also possess antioxidant, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, cardioprotective, radioprotective, antibacterial, antidiarrheal and antiviral properties.
