Putranjiva roxburghii is a moderate-sized, evergreen tree, growing up to 12 m in height and is native to Southeast Asia, India, Japan, Southern China, and New Guinea. It has pendant branches and dark grey bark having horizontal lenticels. Leaves are simple, alternately arranged, dark green, shiny, elliptic-oblong, distantly serrated. The tree is dioceous, possessing male flowers with short stalks, in rounded axillary clusters, and female flowers in leaf axils. Fruits are white coloured, ellipsoid or round in shape, normally containing one, stone pointed and hard seed.   

 

Medicinal properties

Putranjiva roxburghii is an important medicinal plant used in the treatment of various diseases, due to the presence of important chemical compounds like triterpenoids and bioflavonoids. The leaves of the plant are known for their procreant, bitter, refrigerant, and astringent properties, effectively treating illnesses, phlegm, skin ailments, and rheumatism. The plant is traditionally used in Thai medicine for muscle sprains, arthralgia, sickness, and hemorrhoids. Leaves and fruits are used for treating fever, catarrh, sterility, healing broken bones and other health issues. The oils and fatty acids present in the seeds, contribute to analgesic, fever-reducing and sedative properties.
