The Institute's philosophy defines a corporate culture emphasizing patient satisfaction, innovation and employee involvement. Hence, the nursing service has adopted a quality management philosophy to maintain quality patient care through an ongoing process of innovation, prevention of error and staff development.

ORGANIZATION OF NURSING SERVICE

The nursing service division of SCTIMST functions as a non academic division under the control of medical superintendent. Nursing superintendent is the head of the division. Deputy nursing superintendent has to share the responsibilities with nursing superintendent. In addition to the Nursing Superintendent and Deputy Nursing Superintendent, the nursing personnel who are engaged in the patient care delivery consist of the Nursing supervisors, Ward sisters/ Theatre sisters, Staff nurses and the Infection control nurse. Other than this the Senior Lecturer in Nursing and the Speciality Diploma Nursing Students functions in close association with this division. All the nurses are registered nurses and registered midwives (RN; RM). Both male and female nurses work here. However, majority are females.

The specified criteria for selection of a staff nurse is BSC Nursing (RN RM) or 'A' grade Diploma nursing with two years experience in bed side nursing after registration (2yrs Post Basic Diploma Course will be considered as 2 yrs experience in bed side nursing). Experience in Cardiac/ Neuro bedside experience, knowledge in computer operation are desirable. Age limit for appointment is35 years (Age relaxation permitted as per Govt of India norms).

The permanent staff nurses are eligible for getting extraordinary leave for higher education in nursing. Other than this the Institute has got specific guidelines to grant permission for joining distance education programe relevant to nursing on part time basis without affecting the duty schedule. Accordingly we have 13 postgraduate nurses, 55 IGNOU graduated BSc nurses and 31 speciality trained nurses (15 cardiac and 16 neuro nurses) as permanent nursing staff. Forty eight nurses have successfully completed the Certificate in Nursing administration offered by the University of Kerala.

Other staff development programes include organizing short-term training programes/ workshops for nurses (In house training like Computer training, cardiopulmonary resuscitation training). Our department is an identified center for DGHS aided training programe for nurses. Nurses are sent outside for attending training, workshops and conferences with financial assistance and special duty leave. The institute will also grant permission to the nurses to be Resource persons/ Judges/ Examiners. In-service education is a regular activity of the nursing service.

This institute is considered as a resource center for getting specialized experience by the various education institutions from all over India and out side the country. Post graduate nursing students will be given opportunities for observer ship as per the laid down guidelines. Other institutions will be granted permission to depute nurses for acquiring experience in specialized areas.
