Speech Language Pathology and Audiology services at SCTIMST is primarily involved to understand, prevent, identify and treat speech, language and hearing disorders. The major patient groups referred includes persons with motor neuron diseases, epilepsy, neurodevelopmental disorders, dementia and other disorders.

The lab does

  • Routine speech, language and literacy assessments, oromotor assessment, language and functional communication assessment of adults with aphasia and dementia
  • Subjective and objective swallowing assessments including videofluroscopic evaluations of dysphagia
  • Language lateralisation tests for epilepsy patients
  • Augmentative and alternative communication candidacy evaluations and strategies
  • Audiometric testing for aiding the investigations of patients with cochlear and retrocochlear pathology.

Speech assessments specifically include evaluation of voice, articulation, fluency and resonance that affect the communication skills. The lab uses PRAAT and Dr. Speech softwares for indepth spectrographic and voice analysis respectively.

The unit provides speech and language therapy, swallowing therapy, alternative augmentative interventions and counselling especially for neurogenic based cognitive communicative disorders affecting children and adults. The lab is also a sought after training centre for students in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology.
