Director's Message

Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology is an Institute of National Importance under the Department of Science & Technology (DST) of the Union Government. It is also the only science and technology institution under the DST which has a hospital wing. The fundamental objectives of the Institute are to (1) provide high quality treatment for patients with Cardiac and Neurological disorders and (2) conduct research and develop technologies for medical devices for the use of our people which can be manufactured in India. We accomplish our objectives by keeping pace with and incorporating advances in medical science in our clinical practice, conducting rigorous research and developmental activities and providing high quality post graduate and post doctoral training programs.

We have been serving all sections of society for four decades from all parts of India and even the neighboring countries. Our surgical teams perform complex operations on the hearts and brains of patients of all ages; from babies who are only a few weeks old to octogenarians. Through the state-of-the art comprehensive care programs, our multidisciplinary teams of medical professionals treat the most challenging cases with exceptional commitment. The hospital provides totally free treatment to 17.4 percent of patients, of which 4.3% are covered exclusively by the Institute and the rest by central and state government medical insurance schemes. Another 62% get concessions ranging from 10 to 60%, for all the in-patient and out-patient services. At present, only 34 percent of patients, who are in the higher income group or are fully insured, pay the full charges for the services of the hospital. These charges are well below the rates in private hospitals. With the rising costs of health care, escalation in salaries and cost of medical equipment and infrastructure, the economic burden on the Institute has considerably increased, leading to significant budgetary deficits. The grant- in- aid from the central government for medical research and technology development and the internal revenue generated through its services are inadequate to meet the hospital expenses and to continue to provide subsidized treatment to the same extent to patients from poorer socio-economic groups.

Altruism or regard for the welfare of others is a noble aspect of human nature. The Institute, born of a generous gift from the Royal Family of the erstwhile Travancore, has followed the tradition of generosity and kindness towards the poor by reducing their economic burden to save their lives and treat their children. We remain committed to uphold this tradition and for this we need the enthusiastic support from each one of you. We request and welcome all of you to partner in this tradition of generosity and help the Institute realize its motto “Jeeva Jyothir Aseemahi”, which means “ May we Live and have Light”.

Q. Why support SCTIMST?
Our institution has a unique tradition of offering subsidized services to the poor and vulnerable. More than two-thirds of inpatient care and about 60% of outpatient care delivered at the institution during 2012-15 was significantly subsidized, of which 10% of patients received all treatment free of cost. This has helped prevent the sad loss of precious lives due to inability to meet the substantial cost of advanced medical care.
