Epilepsy in Children

It is estimated that there are about 70 thousand persons with epilepsy in Kerala state. Nearly 40 thousand of them are under 18 years of age. In the case of children, parents should explain to the child in simple terms what he is suffering from and try to clear any misconception or fear about the disorder. They should resist from becoming over protective and permit reasonable freedom of movement and play. It is preferable that a senior person accompanies and watches the child during water sports including swimming. A child with epilepsy should not be accused of as the cause of personal inconveniences to other family members. As far as possible they should be regarded as if they had no epilepsy. They should be considered at par with others.
